Inheritance Tax Advice
Inheritance tax in the United States is sometimes called estate tax and it is imposed upon the taxable estate of a deceased person. On the other hand, the gift tax is imposes a tax on the transfer of property while the giver is still alive.
In addition to the federal government many states also impose an estate tax or an inheritance tax. If an asset is left to a spouse or a charitable organization the tax usually doesn’t apply.
Inheritance Taxes
Inheritance taxes or estate taxes are calculated based on the fair market value of all of the property transferred to the beneficiary of the estate. Keep in mind, fair market value is what the property is worth today. The value of the asset or property is not what the original owner paid to obtain the asset.

Individual Federal Tax Rate
Your individual tax rate is determined by your income level. For example if you’re filing single and your income is between $33,950 and $82,250 then, your tax bracket will be 25%. Your tax bracket is the rate you pay on the “last dollar” you earn. Now your tax rate is usually less than the tax bracket percentage.
Taxable Income
Your taxable income is the amount that is left after you subtract adjustments, deductions and exemptions. Of course the tax rates will change as we have seen in the past. We will experience tax hikes and tax cuts depending on who is in office and how the general economy is faring.

Social Security Stimulus Package Breakdown
Do you currently receive social security benefits? The social security administration just released information regarding the cost-of-living adjustment for 2010 on October 15, 2009.
Consumer prices have been down over the past year so anyone who currently receives or will receive social security benefits or supplemental income benefits will not see an automatic increase in 2010.
This will be the first time since 1975 that recipients will not receive an increase for the cost-of-living. This typical increase is determined by the consumer price index (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the last two previous years.

Federal Personal Income Tax Exemptions
The personal income tax is a tax that is intended to make those with higher incomes pay the amount of tax that they should to even out the tax liability for everyone else. It also tries to exempt the poor completely from having to pay personal income tax.
How you claim your exemptions will depend on how you file your return. For most individuals who use the 1040EZ form this will be entered on line 5.
How it works?
You are currently allowed one personal exemption for yourself and one for your spouse. This applies as long as neither of you are claimed as dependents on someone elseʼs return.

IRS Income Tax Write Off for a Charitable Donation
A charitable contribution can be deducted from your income tax if you itemize deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A.
You will want to make sure the organization is qualified before you give a charitable donation. Publication 526 is about Charitable Contributions and it lists some of the qualified organizations but, not all of them. Keep in mind that churches are always qualified but, may not be on the list.
If your charitable donation gives you a benefit like, services, merchandise, admission to a special event, a sporting event, a performing arts show, a banquet or goods, you are only allowed to deduct the amount that goes beyond the normal price of the benefit received.

Home Based Business Tax Deductions
Over the past 15 years, home based businesses have emerged and grown faster than any other sector of the business marketplace.
Everything from businesses selling products on EBay to providing pet grooming or housecleaning services to offering insurance, securities and other financial products right from home have become commonplace businesses. So much so that it is no longer embarrassing to answer the question, “What do you do?” with the response, “I work in my pajamas.”
This is great, but it comes with its challenges. Family life gets disrupted often, and work time is equally easy to disrupt with personal intrusions. Worse, many folks just don’t know what to do about their taxes. While there are some tremendous tax advantages to operating your business from home, it can be very difficult to discern where the lines between personal and business deductions are, and complex tax rules can make it difficult to take ordinary business deductions just because you run your business from home.

Many items purchased for the operation of your business are tax deductible. The important thing to remember is to keep accurate records. You must keep every receipt for the purchase items for your business. You also need to keep your statements for expenses such as, Internet, Credit Card purchases, and expenses which are listed on a statement rather than a receipt.
Business Deduction Definition
To be a valid business deduction the IRS says it must be both ordinary and necessary. To be an ordinary expense it must be common in your trade or business. For example, if you were a painter, then paint would be an ordinary expense. A necessary expense is one that is appropriate and helpful in your trade or business. To be considered necessary, the expense does not have to be indispensible.

The United States tax form 1099, as most people know, is used to claim multiple types of income other than wages, salaries, and tips. It’s technically known as an “information return.”
U. S. tax law requires all businesses to file a 1099 for any contractor they have paid more than six hundred dollars in one year.
During the last few years, businesses have been encouraged to file these forms electronically; if a any business has to file more than two hundred fifty within the year, then electronic filing is actually mandatory. Student Tax Refund
Are you a student? If so you may qualify for additional tax credits. However, there are a few things you need to know when filing your tax return.
The American Opportunity Credit
This credit modifies the Hope Credit that was available for taxpayers in 2008. The American Opportunity Credit was not available prior to 2009. This student tax credit is available to students with a modified adjusted gross income of $80,000 or married filing jointly with a modified AGI of $160,000. The maximum annual credit is $2,500.00 per student, which is a $700.00 increase.
This credit can be used for tuition and certain fees, which include course materials. The course materials can include books, supplies and equipment needed for your class. Also the American Opportunity Credit has expanded to the first four years of a post-secondary education, instead of the first two years as previously in the Hope Credit

Figure on tax increases taking effect in 2011, assuming the economy is growing steadily. At that point, reducing the deficit will no doubt be the top priority.
Here’s what TurboTax 2011 says is rising to the top of the list of probable hikes for individuals:
-
Boosts in top marginal rates from 33% and 35% to 36% and 39.6%.
-
A higher rate on capital gains and dividends for top bracket earners.
-
Caps on itemized deductions for top earners.
-
No repeal of estate taxes, but count on an exemption of at least $3.5 million, and it could be set as high as $5 million if the Senate prevails. Estate tax legislation will include spousal transfers, making the exemption $7 million or more for couples.
-
The estate tax rate will be capped at 45%, as it is now.
-
Easing for the alternative minimum tax, but no repeal.
For Turbo Tax 2011, staying on top of longer term tax hikes continues. It’s likely they will go even further and hit more people and businesses. The only other option is deep cuts in spending, including Social Security, Medicare and defense. Anyone making more than $100,000 a year will be at risk for higher taxes. The most likely option is to raise the cap on income subject to payroll taxes which now stands at $106,800.
