The Influence of World Religions

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

There are many religions in the world, but some are a lot more well-known than others. Christianity is arguably the biggest religion in the world, and then the other famous religions follow: Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam are a few of the prominent religions that usually come to mind, but world religions are a lot more diverse than people might realize. And although religions seem to have been around for ages, they do change over time. Some world religions have died out for the most part—few people still worship the gods of Greek mythology. Other religions are newly created—Scientology is a fairly recently instituted system of belief. And some religions apparently endure, because it’s hard to think of a time when big religions like Christianity and Buddhism didn’t exist unless it was way, way long ago.

World religions can be a pretty controversial topic that strikes a lot of nerves. When it comes to “religion all of the controversy tends to focus on Judeo-Christian faiths. These religions are the ones that are viewed as opposing evolution, stem cell research, abortion, gay marriage and such. Atheism is the rejection of all religious belief, but in the media it tends to be pitted against Christianity almost exclusively. Islam is also sometimes a target because of the public’s association of Islam with radical terrorists. Culture has often focused on Judeo-Christian faith in general, which could be a product of Eurocentrism. For example, in the classroom other world religions aren’t covered in depth and a working knowledge of Christian symbols and principles is a huge advantage in understanding popular literature because most of the books read in school tend to be Eurocentric as well. Why do other religions get much less exposure? One possibility is the fact that proselytizing and the rejection of other faiths are common in Judeo-Christian religions. In contrast, other religions don’t seem to actively speak out against other faiths and some even accept them.

World religions might seem very different from each other, but they do have common ties. Belief as opposed to non-belief is already a big commonality, but there are some who would say that it runs deeper than that. For example, the famous story of the flood in Christianity is an element found in Greek mythology and even earlier than that in Sumerian religion. This is a concept that would bring world religions together and ironically tear people apart because the world allows for many different points of view and yet they can’t logically all be true. This conundrum isn’t going to be resolved anytime soon, but one thing is for certain—there are many religions in this world and some of them will always have more influence than others.

Religions of the World Was One of My Favorite Classes

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

I once took a course in college called Religions of the World, which was pretty self-explanatory, and I soon fell in love with the class. It was because of this course that I decided to minor in religion when I was in college.

The class focused on the major religions of the world which have millions of followers, but it did incorporate some of the smaller religions as well.

Religions of the World started with Hinduism, which is believed to be the world’s oldest major religion. Of course, it is a polytheistic religion, meaning that adherents believe that there are multiple gods, and it includes such concepts as reincarnation, meaning that when we die we are born again as someone or something else.

Are You Prepared for Christian Persecution?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

It’s hard to believe there is so much Christian persecution throughout the world, but it’s even harder to believe it right here in the United States.

We must get prepared, so please go to Matthew 10:17-42 and read what Jesus tells the disciples about preparing for persecution.

The Merry Christmas Analysis

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

The holiday season is fast approaching once again and the analyzing of Merry Christmas has already begun.

There are groups voicing their god given opinions on weather or not our schools or governmental buildings should display the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’ or not. Sure they have the right to their own opinion, however those that are against Merry Christmas always seem to forget the true meaning of this time of year.

Many different religions believe this time of year has special meanings based on specific historical events, along with their associated traditions. Lets try to continue a long standing tradition of saying Merry Christmas.

However if you don’t happen to celebrate Christmas, please consider Merry Christmas to be a general holiday greeting for whatever holiday you happen to celebrate.

Buddhist Temples

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

The US has temples from New York City down to Tennessee. There are several in England and one in Scotland. Other Buddhist temples are in India, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, Canada and Bhutan.  Many temples around the world are still working temples with monks observing all the rituals. They can be heard chanting and using bells and gongs. The story of the religion is often depicted by symbols, which are associated with the life of Buddha, and these appear in the Buddhist temples.

One Perspective on Women in Business

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

When it comes to women in business, the rules tend to change.

Now, I do realize that there are numerous women in high ranks of corporations and politics these days, but just hear me out. In my experience men will help each other move up; maybe put in a good word for one another and become allies. This is not typically the case with women in business. In fact, the women I’ve known in upper-scale companies…
