Glocal – What is in a word?

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Glocal or more frequently Glocalization is a word now in more common usage that has, surprisingly, been around for almost 2 decades. According to Wikipedia it was coined a generation ago by Dr. Manfred Lange in Bonn, Germany in 1990 while preparing for the Global Change Exhibition. He was interested in the interaction between local, regional and global interactions hence coining the term GLOCAL.

British government tries to encourage people to save with amended ISA regulation

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

The British are saving too little. According to the website creditaction.org.uk only about 40% of the population think about their financial future and just below 30% don’t have any savings at all. This number is alarming! With this attitude the British have managed to accumulate a huge mountain of consumer debt as they rather spend money then save it.

Already as far back as in 1999 the British government has tried to encourage people to save money in order to have a secure financial future by introducing ISAs – independent savings accounts. With these accounts people are able to have tax free savings up to a certain level each year. However, recent statistics prove that the scheme hasn’t been accepted by the general public as a lot of young British don’t even know that an ISA is.

Therefore, from 6th April 2008 the rules will be changed in order to make the ISA system more understandable. The annual allowance will be 7,200 pounds for 2008 of which you can save one half in cash and the other half in stocks or shares. The HMRC website gives all information about this new approach.

Obviously the advantage of an ISA is that you have to pay no tax and also no capital gains tax on shares. However, an ISA has less flexibility than a normal savings account as withdrawing money is more complicated. Also you can only switch your stocks in to cash but you can’t exchange cash for shares.

The British government now has to evaluate if ISAs become more accepted with the new amendments and if this measure can encourage the British to finally take care of their financial future.

Political Tourism in Wisconsin

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

If the primaries were held as first in the nation here it would increase Wisconsin tourism. Unfortunately the parties fined other states for pulling such a stunt and it didn’t go well for them. They weren’t allowed to send any representatives, and I think that was a little harsh. Just because the parties broke the ruled doesn’t mean that the citizens shouldn’t have the opportunity to decide who they want for a candidate. I think that is just wrong and should be against the constitution someplace. Our government was founded on being of the people, by the people, and for the people. That principle is violated when they can’t send their representatives. What would happen to our democracy if that rule were allowed during the main election rather than the primary? There was a large turnout on the democratic side for the election that didn’t mean a thing. I don’t know if their vote would have changed things or not, but that isn’t the point, the point is that the people were not represented even if it was only a minor election. If I were king I would have found a better punishment for the offending state, something like no income for any of the political ads that were run.

Illinois Vacations for Obama

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I wonder how many Illinois vacations Obama has taken. He appears to be a driven man and, of course, he isn’t taking any vacations right now. With a schedule as demanding as his it’s a wonder that he even has time for sleep. I could never run for the office of President of the United States, by the time it hits six pm I’m pretty much in my down mode. That is the time to relax, slow down, and calm yourself before bedtime. These guys are barely into the middle of their day at that time. Obama looks like he is in good shape and he is defiantly young so maybe he can withstand it better than most. I was going to go and vote for him just because he is so young and I think we need  some new fresh ideas in this country and he is the freshest person running. Unfortunately I was called out of town on the night the vote took place and we don’t have absentee voting here so I was unable to show my support. However he did win my state without my help. In some ways my vote was an anti Hillary vote because I don’t believe her ideas are new and fresh in any way, shape, or form.

Irish Warn That They May be Unable to Meet Tough New Landfill Diversion Targets Which the Scottish Will Beat and Exceed

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Throughout Europe the public dislikes landfill so much that they are willing to pay a hefty premium on their rates bill for expensive (but green, and environmentally positive) recycling, and the European Union saw this campaign and has taken it further by issuing a Directive throughout all member states, including new accession states, that organic waste, that is all waste known as BMW (Biological Municipal Waste) being sent to landfill must be reduced substantially. After all, it is this waste which causes odours, and as it rots and decomposes in landfills, causes the greatest risk to the environment.

Now, on this subject there have been two completely opposite pieces of news with the last few days.

That is while in Ireland there are now serious concerns that their policy will be ineffective and in 2010 the Irish will fail to meet the target for landfill diversion, the opposite is true in Scotalnd where they find diversion and recycling easy.

But the problem is that in Ireland the amount they sent to landfill last year actual still continued to rise – despite all their recycling efforts.

In Scotland they announced that not content with their own success, they will now go better than the EU requirements, and aim for a zero waste (to landfill) policy.

But, across the Irish sea all is so different and the Irish politicans really do have to get their landfill and recycling policy sorted out. Financial restraints alone are not going to be enough to reduce landfilling. Charges for landfilling waste are already extremely high.

Failure to comply with the EU Directive would mean that Ireland would be charged a heavy fine by the EU Parliament.

On the other hand the Scots must surely be applauded for their environmental awareness and commitment to keep their beautiful country clean, and as landfill waste free as possible. For more about the politics of waste management visit the Wastersblog.

The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

The Political Brain is a groundbreaking scientific investigation into how the mind and brain really work and how it affects candidates winning and losing elections.

In politics, when reason and emotion collide, emotion invariably wins. In this landmark book, scientist and psychologist Drew Westen shows through a whirlwind tour of American political leaders how electorates vote not with their heads but with their hearts and how the marketplace that matters most is the marketplace of emotion, filled with values, images, analogies, moral sentiments, and moving oratory. Listen  to a free sample here…

The first serious investigation into how emotions affect voter behavior, The Political Brain reveals how the political landscape would change if candidates began with a twenty-first-century understanding of how the mind and brain really work. Listen  to a free sample here…

Make Your Message Understandable with PowerPoint

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

PowerPoint has become such a common business standard that a mediocre PowerPoint presentation is immediately marked as such. Especially if you’re making a sales presentation, a poor presentation may even harm your business.

In other kinds of corporate meetings, they can help to underscore the point being made, or simply provide an outline for the presenter to follow. Putting time into creating a good quality PowerPoint presentation is a great way to demonstrate to attendees of a meeting that the facts you’re giving is important, right, and in the case of sales presentations, financially valuable to all

There are several hints you can follow to create PowerPoint presentations more quickly and efficiently. One is to quicken the choosing of fonts by previewing fonts in the font toolbar. To do this, just go to Tools/Customize, click the Options tab, then click “List font names in their font.” Another way to speed up creating presentation slides is to use a default text style for your slides. This both helps to make your PowerPoint presentations to look more professional, and it speeds up their formation. To set a new default, go to Format, then Font. Apply the changes you need, then click OK.

Since PowerPoint in sales talks and other meetings is such an important tool, it’s key to spend some time learning how to improve your own PowerPoint presentations. For both amateurs and advanced users, there are always tricks to be learned to make your talks more striking and effective.

Another good way to help your PowerPoint presentation is to create a handout to go along with the information. With PowerPoint, you want to augment the information you’re providing, so be sure to keep the facts in the presentation itself to a minimum. Keep slides clean, brief, and impactful.

If you want to assemble truly striking PowerPoint presentations but don’t have either the time or the expertise to do it yourself, PowerPoint templates can be a good option. There are a number of free PowerPoint templates available for download on the internet, but if you want really good quality and professional looking templates, you might want to think about paid templates.

Don’t use too many bullet points and particularly don’t use paragraphs to get your meaning across. You should be doing that yourself. Also, don’t overwhelm your presentation with graphics, involved animated transitions, and graphics. Remember that the presentation is about the information. Especially for sales presentations, you don’t want anybody in the room to depart feeling that they’ve wasted their time watching fancy cliparts. Too many extras on your PowerPoint slides will detract from your presentation rather than add to it.

A method to keep your PowerPoint presentations clear and useful is to follow the 10-20-30 rule for PowerPoint presentations. The 10-20-30 rule states that a presentation should consist of no more than ten PowerPoint slides, last no more than 20 minutes, and utilize a font no smaller than 30-point. Following the 10-20-30 rule helps you to keep your meeting short, brief, and informative.

PowerPoint is one of the most helpful presentation tools you can use for business meetings and sales presentations. A good PowerPoint presentation helps to underline your point while giving the audience pieces of information that will last. While a good presentation will help your business and add to your meeting, a poor one can do just the opposite.

Iowa Tourism/ It’s Party Time

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

It’s party time in Iowa and you aren’t going to want to miss it!  Iowa tourism should be flourishing until the 3rd of January when the caucus is held and then the candidates and most of their staff members will book out of the state to go try to convince some other state residents that their line of crap is the best line of crap out there!

Now Iowa tourism may be a term that most of the candidates and their staff would not believe they qualify to be placed with, after all, they are candidates, not tourists.  Well, let’s see, they come in to the state, they stay in hotels, they eat at our restaurants, they buy gasoline for their cars which they drive from one corner of the state to the other.  They visit museums, corn processing plants, city halls, ball games and more.  They spend great amounts of money in the state and then, alas, they leave for another 4 years.  I think that qualifies them as tourists.

Now, don’t get me wrong, we love having them here.  Both the Demo crates and the Republicans are more than welcome to come to Iowa.  They spend their money all over the state which helps with the Iowa tourism economy.  In most cases they are polite, at least out in public, and they respect the citizens of Iowa (at least out in public).  They are a wonderful addition to the normal tourist that visits the state, we would love to have them come and spend time here after the election, but you can bet your bottom dollar that a little bitty state like Iowa isn’t on the top of their “I need to go back there” list!  Oh well, we’ll take what we can get.

Getting A Government Grant

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Do you need some cash and need it now? Hey, welcome to the club. I think it’s safe to assume that most adults in the United States are in need of additional funds. Is this because we typically have horrible and depressing incomes? No! It has more to do with our past and current spending habits.

Anaerobic Digestion Popularity Rises as Governments Start to Subsidise

Monday, December 10th, 2007

The word is spreading fast. Anaerobic Digestion is a natural waste composting process. It is simply composting without air. It is the only way to produce methane naturally, and methane is extremely useful as a non-fossil fuel, and non climate-changing fuel, and many govenments especially in Europe are beginning to realise this and subsidise the process for farmers and industrial users.

Why, methane can even be processed into the car fuel “bioethanol” and “bio-diesel”!

It is so much better to make biodiesel from non-food sources, and the best is to use it to make electricty and biofuel from organic wastes, such as farm slurries, sewage sludge etc. These materials are often nowadays still being sent into landfills where they add to the odour problems.

The technology for Anaerobic Digestion is not nearly as well developed as for most other technologies as for so long nobody was willing to invest in it.

Now things are changing especially in Europe and governments are starting to subsidies Anaerobic digestion installations. Plant will soon get much chepaer as thye become of-the shelf items.

Encourage your local politicians to support anaerobic digestion of waste organic materials. Reduce taxes on AD produced biofuel. It makes sense. AD has masses of things about it which are better than composting aerobically.

Get on over to our web site at the Anaerobic Digestion Community here, and find out more about the win, win, win of AD. Listen to the BBC’s Archers (Radio 4 series) where they are running a story on it within this very popular long running UK radio serial.

Carrie Chapman Catt, A True Heavy Hitter in Political History

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Central Iowa has a number of fascinating history in the political world and one of the most interesting is Carrie Chapman Catt, a leader of the U.S. woman suffrage movement, founder of the League of Women Voters, crusader for international peace, and an advocate for the expansion of women’s rights throughout the world.   How interesting it is to study the movement, to see the difficulties that the movement had to overcome to gain equality in the polls for women and the dedication of women (and some men) to the cause in the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics located on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames.

If you have an interest in politics and want to study the history of the women’s movement you will want to visit Central Iowa and the museum at ISU.

The Merry Christmas Analysis

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

The holiday season is fast approaching once again and the analyzing of Merry Christmas has already begun.

There are groups voicing their god given opinions on weather or not our schools or governmental buildings should display the phrase ‘Merry Christmas’ or not. Sure they have the right to their own opinion, however those that are against Merry Christmas always seem to forget the true meaning of this time of year.

Many different religions believe this time of year has special meanings based on specific historical events, along with their associated traditions. Lets try to continue a long standing tradition of saying Merry Christmas.

However if you don’t happen to celebrate Christmas, please consider Merry Christmas to be a general holiday greeting for whatever holiday you happen to celebrate.

Target Shooting Is My Joy But Not Everyone Agrees

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I grow up in Iowa so as a young child I seen a great deal of shooting. People in the area were always practicing archery, target shooting, and constantly hunting and going to shooting events. Where I lived it was actually just a very normal hobby. Most sports even came in second to firearms. Most folks got heaps more excited over a Desert Eagle hand gun than they ever did a soccer ball. I mean can you really blame us for that? So basically I was taught that weapons and firearms in general for me was a common part of life. I by nature acquired a lot of my own when I was an adult since I grew up with them, however unfortunately not everybody agrees with me on this.

Should the U.S. Government Bail Out Homeowners?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

We all know that many U.S. homeowners with sub-prime mortgages have gone into foreclosure or are at serious risk of going into foreclosure.  This crisis is so widespread that many lenders, including one of the largest mortgage lenders: Countrywide Financial, have taken a serious financial hit due to their sub-prime mortgage loans.  Some private banks have come to the rescue, like Bank of America’s assistance to Countrywide but the U.S. Government has also stepped in to pressure many sub-prime lenders to restructure their adjustable rate loans to sub-prime lenders.

Many are blaming the lenders for making inappropriate loans to sub-prime lenders that allowed them to receive an adjustable rate mortgage with little or no down payment. These borrowers could afford to make payments on the 100% loan-to-value ARMs with the low interest rates that were available at the time but after just a moderate increase in interest rates, these borrowers have seen their monthly payments increase significantly.  While the lenders should be held responsible for the financial impact to their company of making loans that were sure to have interest rate increases and higher monthly payments to borrowers who could barely afford the loan at the initial interest rates, the borrowers should also be responsible for accepting a loan they surely wouldn’t be able to afford in the near future.

This sub-prime mortgage crisis is also driving up housing rental prices across the country as many sub-prime lenders who probably should have been renting in the first place have lost their homes and the demand for rental housing has increased.  Investment/Rental property owners are enjoying the market price increases due to this activity as many owners are receiving many more inquiries from their condo and home rental advertising.

The U.S. Government is bailing out many of these borrowers for poor financial decisions and eliminating the personal consequences for these borrowers.  While the impact of this activity to the U.S. economy is undeniable, it is inappropriate for the Federal Government to be bailing out individual borrowers who made poor personal financial decisions.  These borrowers should not be able to keep a home that they cannot afford to pay for at current interest rates just because their defaults will have a negative impact on the economy.  The lenders and borrowers made bad decisions that will affect us all, but we must endure that consequence as a byproduct of our free market economy.

Office Design and The Executive Office Ego

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

It is commonly believed that what separates the men from the boys is grit and determination. Most people think that, to climb the corporate ladder you have to be willing to put everything into your job. People believe that this, combined with some natural skills, is enough for anyone to succeed in the American dream. They are wrong. What is needed, more than anything else, is a sense of theater. Although people are rarely consciously aware of symbols of rank and status within the office interior design, unconsciously we know all about them. More important than hard work, more important than ruthlessness, more important even than competency, is self-confidence.

As a matter of fact, you can see the evidence of rank in almost any artifact of your typical office interior design. Take executive offices, for example. I work in a large office, and many of the lower ranking employees are forced to work in cramped, uncomfortable cubicles. Their executive office chairs are nothing to look at, and in fact are part of their low rank. The executive chairs of the partners, by contrast, are made of genuine leather – comfortable, sumptuous, and conspicuously expenses. This is probably much like any office interior design, and something that most people wouldn’t glance twice at. A closer look at the executive chairs, however, reveals some important distinctions between those who will one day make it and those who won’t.

Contrast the executive chairs of any of the junior partners, and you’ll see important distinctions. Mike Smith, for example, has received promotion after promotion although he has only been here for a few months and is not all that bright. On his plain desk chair, he has added a leather pad. ostensibly, it is for ergonomic purposes, but in fact it conveys a powerful subconscious message. It says that his current status as an underling is only a temporary thing, that already management and greatness or within his grasp.

Right next door, James Jones’ cubicle tells a very different story. His executive chair also has pads on it, but they are merely functional. They serve to help his back problems, but their undecorated features tell the story of his life at the company. He will never sit in one of the sumptuous executive chairs – He has twice the smarts of Mike, but less than half the ambition. His chair looks too comfortable, in fact, and he is too comfortable as well, wallowing in his position of insignificance.

Mace Pepper Spray – Legal To Keep You Safe

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

When you choose to carry a weapon to keep you safe you need to make it accessible at all times or else it’s pointless. Why do I say this? Well if at anytime you come into a situation and you can’t access your Mace pepper spray or your stun gun in a split second then it’s probably not going to do you any good. If your about to be assaulted the person is not going to stop and let you rummage around into your bag to find your Mace pepper spray. This is why when you choose to carry a weapon you need to make it accessible. Never leave your weapon in the bottom of your bag, purse, or glove compartment. In the instant it’s needed you will never be able to reach it in time. Now this is something to think about. It is in your best interest to keep it in your hand when ever you feel the situation could call for it. It may be your walking along a street or going to a remote location just make sure it’s in your hand.
