Lee Greif - Career In Politics

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Though he had many different careers in his life, Lee Greif recalls his five year turn in politics with the most fondness. First hired in 1971 by new Congressman of New York Peter Peyser, Greif was chosen by Peyser to be his chief of staff. The early 1970s was a tumultuous time to be in politics, but it was obvious Peyser did not regret picking Grief as his chief of staff because he ran two successful campaigns for reelection. Throughout this period, despite the high tension of the era, Grief was extremely grateful to be involved in the political arena as he found it very interesting.

Pete Peysers had become a capable and popular politician in his own right. Peysers was the democratic senator who represented the inner city of Chicago. Peysers had become a strong political advocate of Nelson Rockefeller, at one point they were actually very close friends. The two often consulted on potential policy decisions. Peysers’ connection to Rockefeller eventually gave Grief the opportunity to work with special and famous projects. Peysers’ gained much attention from the other senators because of his influential work on an array of projects. The projects were often difficult, but it was nothing Peyser could not accomplish.

During the early 1970s, there were very few events that demanded the attention or skills of Cheif of Staff Greif. However, one such occurrence that he did participate in, and is particularly proud of, was a Whitehouse dinner party hosted by President Nixon, and included three additional congressman and their chiefs of staff. Along with this dinner, Greif was also present at many political briefings with the Secretaries of State and Defense. And, due to his service for both political parties — as a Democrat during the Vietnam War and as a Republican during Watergate — he often had to defend policies that were not popular. Greif is able to recall two instance in particular where he had to defend things that were enacted by his former bosses and the president.

Lee Greif was acting as a chief of state in Washington in the early 1970’s. It was here where he met Randee, the woman who would be his first wife. Randee was working in Washington as a chief of staff for Missouri senator Thomas Eagleton. Greif and Randee became good friends with Eagleton. He was considered an upstanding gentleman and spent much time with Greif and Randee. Greif’s friendship with Eagleton was also a huge asset, as Eagleton was a dedicated public servant. Greif began to see him as a sort of role model and source of inspiration. Eagleton would eventually go on the ballot as Vice President for McGovern. The five years Grief was in Washington as chief of state for Peter Peyser served as an important and joyful time. He would apply the skills and knowledge he learned here to all other challenges in his life.

Lee Greif - Role In Politics

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Though he had many different careers in his life, Lee Greif recalls his five year turn in politics with the most fondness. First hired in 1971 by new Congressman of New York Peter Peyser, Greif was chosen by Peyser to be his chief of staff. The early 1970s was a tumultuous time to be in politics, but it was obvious Peyser did not regret picking Grief as his chief of staff because he ran two successful campaigns for reelection. Throughout this period, despite the high tension of the era, Grief was extremely grateful to be involved in the political arena as he found it very interesting.

Grief had a way of taking a difficult goal and achieving it, not matter what. His bosses took note of that, assigning him some very high-profile tasks that only bettered his reputation. It wasn’t just his talent or work ethic that often helped him. He had connections. Among them was Peter Peyser, a notable political player as well. The Republican congressman, who served Westchester County, a suburb of New York, had strong ties to Nelson Rockefeller, both professionally and personally. They were friends, but they also combined forces to craft some important public policies. Through his relationship with Peyser, Grief used the Rockefeller connection to open some doors.

There were a lot of opportunities for Greif to be involved in a hands-on way while he was chief of staff in the early 1970s. Along with three congressional chiefs of staff, he was on the scene for one of Nixon’s dinner parties at the White House, and he got experience briefing many high-ranking officials, including state and defense department secretaries. But working for a Democrat during two periods of crisis — Watergate and the Vietnam war — Greif wasn’t always well liked by everyone, and sometimes he had to tout controversial ideas and policies. He remembers at least twice having to stand up for administration proposals that didn’t have a lot of public support.

Lee Grief first met Randee, the woman who would become his first wife, while he was working as a Chief of Staff in Washington, DC in the early 1970s. At the time, she was also working as a chief of staff, for Missouri senator Thomas Eagleton. Lee, Randee, and Senator Eagleton all became very good friends; the couple thought he was a wonderful person and often spent time with him. Further, since Eagleton was a hard-working public figure, his political support was invaluable to Lee’s career. He came to be a role model and enormous inspirational force in Lee’s life. Eagleton even, later in his career, ran for Vice President under George McGovern. Grief’s five years working for Peter Peyser in Washington would prove to be a time crucial to his career, and one he remembered very happily later in life. The experience he gained in that time proved to be invaluable as his career progressed.

Lee Greif - Chief Of Staff

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Lee Greif has had a wide variety of jobs and careers in his lifetime, but the five years he spent in politics are definitely among his favorite. The early 1970s were turbulent times, but it was a great time to be associated with politics, and Greif is grateful that he had the opportunity to be an active participant. In 1971, during Peter Peyser’s inaugural term as a New York congressman, Peyser hired Greif to be his chief of staff. This was one of the best decisions Peyser could have made, because during his tenure as chief of staff, Greif led two campaigns that led to successful reelection bids.

Peter Peyser was an interesting and successful politician in his own right. Peyser was the republican congressman who represented the suburban Westchester County. Peyser was a close political associate of Nelson Rockefeller and the two were actually good friends. Many were the times that the two would develop policies together. Peyser’s connections with Rockefeller would give Grief the chance to work on many special and prestigious projects. He drew much attention from his superiors due to the excellent job he performed on them. The assignments may have been difficult, but it was nothing that Grief wasn’t able to accomplish.

Eagleton was known for his dedication to the community and his constituents, and his reputation was such that he was later named to McGovern’s presidential ticket. Greif looked up to him, and he would look back on his 5 years as Peyser’s chief of staff as some of the most formative years of his life.

Lee Greif began his political career in 1971

Lee Greif has engaged in many different careers throughout his life, none of which he recalls more fondly than his five year stint in politics. Although they were tumultuous and filled with some heavy tension, the early 1970s were an amazing time to be in the political arena and Greif is extremely appreciative that he could be a part of it. What’s your take on political campaign strategies?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Political campaign strategies seem to first rely on name and face recognition. When the candidates have gathered sufficient funds to launch their campaigns, they seem to put a metaphorical wet finger up to the breeze to gauge the American sentiment. In the previous Presidential election, negative political campaign strategies became a big no-no with the public. So this season’s political campaign strategies avoid such shenanigans like the plague. However unfortunate, it does seem that political campaign strategies are formulated to please the greatest number of voters. Political campaign strategies live and die on the turn of a phrase or the number of television ads placed. Now, we hear a more generalized call for change, which forms a loosely defined catch-all box for the current political campaign strategies. See also: psychology study guides

Glocal - What is in a word?

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Glocal or more frequently Glocalization is a word now in more common usage that has, surprisingly, been around for almost 2 decades. According to Wikipedia it was coined a generation ago by Dr. Manfred Lange in Bonn, Germany in 1990 while preparing for the Global Change Exhibition. He was interested in the interaction between local, regional and global interactions hence coining the term GLOCAL.

Disposable Plastic Bags - The Symptom Not The Problem

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

In a world full of hot political potatoes where simply saying the wrong thing or aligning yourself with the wrong cause can seriously damage a political career it might seem that Gordon Brown the UK Prime Minister has played safe with his critism of disposable plastic bags but the plastic bag issue is just the tip of the iceberg where the big problem for society today is the consumerism that has fed it so well for the last few years. The issue of the disposable plastic bag may simply disappear with a ban on the issue of free disposable bags but the problems of the throwaway society run much deeper.

If the primaries were held as first in the nation here it would increase Wisconsin tourism. Unfortunately the parties fined other states for pulling such a stunt and it didn’t go well for them. They weren’t allowed to send any representatives, and I think that was a little harsh. Just because the parties broke the ruled doesn’t mean that the citizens shouldn’t have the opportunity to decide who they want for a candidate. I think that is just wrong and should be against the constitution someplace. Our government was founded on being of the people, by the people, and for the people. That principle is violated when they can’t send their representatives. What would happen to our democracy if that rule were allowed during the main election rather than the primary? There was a large turnout on the democratic side for the election that didn’t mean a thing. I don’t know if their vote would have changed things or not, but that isn’t the point, the point is that the people were not represented even if it was only a minor election. If I were king I would have found a better punishment for the offending state, something like no income for any of the political ads that were run.

Politics driving tourism legislation in South Dakota

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Politicians in South Dakota are really pushing South Dakota tourism in their legislation. They are trying to get rid of any obstacles that would keep people from making tourist destinations and anything that would keep people from coming to the state. I know a lot of people wonder what the government can do to help. Well, in my opinion the best things they can do involve removing regulations. There is far too much tax code written that , although not meant to hurt the industry, actually does. If you make it too cumbersome to run a motel then there will be no more motels built. Some health regulations need to be in place, but the laws are more severe for tourist places than they are for local places. Are tourists more important than citizens of the state? I certainly don’t think so. The politicians seem to be way too quick to make legislation to address a single incident that likely will never happen again. The unintended consequences are often a big road block to the tourist industry. For some reason the legislators only see a problem and a fix and never even try to see what else the new legislation will affect.

Anaerobic Digestion Popularity Rises as Governments Start to Subsidise

Monday, December 10th, 2007

The word is spreading fast. Anaerobic Digestion is a natural waste composting process. It is simply composting without air. It is the only way to produce methane naturally, and methane is extremely useful as a non-fossil fuel, and non climate-changing fuel, and many govenments especially in Europe are beginning to realise this and subsidise the process for farmers and industrial users.

Why, methane can even be processed into the car fuel “bioethanol” and “bio-diesel”!

It is so much better to make biodiesel from non-food sources, and the best is to use it to make electricty and biofuel from organic wastes, such as farm slurries, sewage sludge etc. These materials are often nowadays still being sent into landfills where they add to the odour problems.

The technology for Anaerobic Digestion is not nearly as well developed as for most other technologies as for so long nobody was willing to invest in it.

Now things are changing especially in Europe and governments are starting to subsidies Anaerobic digestion installations. Plant will soon get much chepaer as thye become of-the shelf items.

Encourage your local politicians to support anaerobic digestion of waste organic materials. Reduce taxes on AD produced biofuel. It makes sense. AD has masses of things about it which are better than composting aerobically.

Get on over to our web site at the Anaerobic Digestion Community here, and find out more about the win, win, win of AD. Listen to the BBC’s Archers (Radio 4 series) where they are running a story on it within this very popular long running UK radio serial.

Political Reform For The Mortgage Will It Hurt Low Payment Motorcycle Loans

Friday, November 16th, 2007

In the last half of 2007 there was roughly $127 Billion in adjustible rate mortgages which flipped off the low introductory payment and eventually left buyers with a payment so high many had no choice but to file bankruptcy. This is only the begenning since 2008 will see $526 Billion dollars flip from adjustible rate mortgages. With such substantial hardships to come there will definitly be some political reform in the mortgage market.

However, it has yet to be seen if this reform will hurt other markets like the the one for motorcycle loans with low payments. Since many motorcycle loans are purchased with low introductry payments they resemble an adjustible rate mortgage, but on a much smaller scale. With this just be overlooked as a non issue or will politicians hit all financial markets with a big sledge hammer?

One thing is for sure the government should not bail out this situation. That will leave tax payers financing more crap debt for those who made risky investments. This is not fair to tax payers and no tax payer should stand for it.

Do not let politicians make bad decision for you. Make sure you get out and vote to ensure that you are not paying for those who make risky gambles on real estate and other investments. In the end, you will feel a good accomplishiment to vote your way.

Target Shooting Is My Joy But Not Everyone Agrees

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

I grow up in Iowa so as a young child I seen a great deal of shooting. People in the area were always practicing archery, target shooting, and constantly hunting and going to shooting events. Where I lived it was actually just a very normal hobby. Most sports even came in second to firearms. Most folks got heaps more excited over a Desert Eagle hand gun than they ever did a soccer ball. I mean can you really blame us for that? So basically I was taught that weapons and firearms in general for me was a common part of life. I by nature acquired a lot of my own when I was an adult since I grew up with them, however unfortunately not everybody agrees with me on this.

Food Additives Should They Be Tested More

Monday, October 29th, 2007

For the better part food additives are completely safe even though there has been a lot of controversy around them. Additives have been added to foods for quite a long time, and a lot of our favorite popular foods that I and you eat almost daily contain at least some of these ingredients. My dear friend, who is really fussy and concerned about food additives, had me panicked a little bit about them. She had me where I was really worrying. She was really concerned and said you just don’t know what a food additive could do to you. She considers that there were just not sufficient enough studies into them. When I did a bit of research on my own however I discovered there wasn’t any ground for concern. Several of the basic food ingredients, are in fact, additives. However it usually pays to be reasonable careful, but do not get to frantic all the same!

Jobs For Teens Caring For The Youth Of America

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

When I turned fourteen my parents encouraged me to go out and seek employment, they really wanted me to get a job. I was definitely not impressed with the idea, I would say I was less than thrilled, but in the end my new financial gain was really pretty invigorating. I never thought that I would enjoy working throughout my summer vacation however what happened as a result was it produced many lasting memories and a real sense of pride and responsibility that I most probably wouldn’t have realized otherwise. I started by working for an amusement park that was local, it had been known through out the district as an excellent place as it provided jobs for teens. Certainly, it did not pay an enormous sum of money but the added advantage was I also got free tickets to visit the park when I had a few days off so that I was able to enjoy all the rides which I couldn’t do while I was working.

Wedding Planning Without the Politics

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Planning a wedding can be similar to running for a public position in government.  There are many constituents to satisfy that you know you will have to get along with long after the event.  There are vendors to negotiate with and bribes to offer, etc.  However, just like every political candidate has a campaign manager, every bride-to-be should have a proven printable wedding planner to help her navigate the challenging path ahead.

Office Design and The Executive Office Ego

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

It is commonly believed that what separates the men from the boys is grit and determination. Most people think that, to climb the corporate ladder you have to be willing to put everything into your job. People believe that this, combined with some natural skills, is enough for anyone to succeed in the American dream. They are wrong. What is needed, more than anything else, is a sense of theater. Although people are rarely consciously aware of symbols of rank and status within the office interior design, unconsciously we know all about them. More important than hard work, more important than ruthlessness, more important even than competency, is self-confidence.

As a matter of fact, you can see the evidence of rank in almost any artifact of your typical office interior design. Take executive offices, for example. I work in a large office, and many of the lower ranking employees are forced to work in cramped, uncomfortable cubicles. Their executive office chairs are nothing to look at, and in fact are part of their low rank. The executive chairs of the partners, by contrast, are made of genuine leather – comfortable, sumptuous, and conspicuously expenses. This is probably much like any office interior design, and something that most people wouldn’t glance twice at. A closer look at the executive chairs, however, reveals some important distinctions between those who will one day make it and those who won’t.

Contrast the executive chairs of any of the junior partners, and you’ll see important distinctions. Mike Smith, for example, has received promotion after promotion although he has only been here for a few months and is not all that bright. On his plain desk chair, he has added a leather pad. ostensibly, it is for ergonomic purposes, but in fact it conveys a powerful subconscious message. It says that his current status as an underling is only a temporary thing, that already management and greatness or within his grasp.

Right next door, James Jones’ cubicle tells a very different story. His executive chair also has pads on it, but they are merely functional. They serve to help his back problems, but their undecorated features tell the story of his life at the company. He will never sit in one of the sumptuous executive chairs – He has twice the smarts of Mike, but less than half the ambition. His chair looks too comfortable, in fact, and he is too comfortable as well, wallowing in his position of insignificance.
