Office Design and The Executive Office Ego

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

It is commonly believed that what separates the men from the boys is grit and determination. Most people think that, to climb the corporate ladder you have to be willing to put everything into your job. People believe that this, combined with some natural skills, is enough for anyone to succeed in the American dream. They are wrong. What is needed, more than anything else, is a sense of theater. Although people are rarely consciously aware of symbols of rank and status within the office interior design, unconsciously we know all about them. More important than hard work, more important than ruthlessness, more important even than competency, is self-confidence.

As a matter of fact, you can see the evidence of rank in almost any artifact of your typical office interior design. Take executive offices, for example. I work in a large office, and many of the lower ranking employees are forced to work in cramped, uncomfortable cubicles. Their executive office chairs are nothing to look at, and in fact are part of their low rank. The executive chairs of the partners, by contrast, are made of genuine leather – comfortable, sumptuous, and conspicuously expenses. This is probably much like any office interior design, and something that most people wouldn’t glance twice at. A closer look at the executive chairs, however, reveals some important distinctions between those who will one day make it and those who won’t.

Contrast the executive chairs of any of the junior partners, and you’ll see important distinctions. Mike Smith, for example, has received promotion after promotion although he has only been here for a few months and is not all that bright. On his plain desk chair, he has added a leather pad. ostensibly, it is for ergonomic purposes, but in fact it conveys a powerful subconscious message. It says that his current status as an underling is only a temporary thing, that already management and greatness or within his grasp.

Right next door, James Jones’ cubicle tells a very different story. His executive chair also has pads on it, but they are merely functional. They serve to help his back problems, but their undecorated features tell the story of his life at the company. He will never sit in one of the sumptuous executive chairs – He has twice the smarts of Mike, but less than half the ambition. His chair looks too comfortable, in fact, and he is too comfortable as well, wallowing in his position of insignificance.

Time for Governments to Subsidise Anaerobic Digestion

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Anaerobic Digestion is a cinderella among waste treatment technologies, and yet it provides a unique method by which the fuel methane is produced. Methane is natural gas. It is hardly necessary to point out that natural gas is an incredibly useful green fuel with the advantages that it can be:-

  • made from waste, waste slurries etc (energy that is freely available and would othewise be wasted);
  • burnt easily to create electricity plus heat which can be used for example to heat a greenhouse;
  • converted to hydrogen which is a clean fuel and can be used in an hydrogen fuel cell;
  • is a fuel unaffected by oil price and thus provides price stability;
  • converted to a biofuel for cars such as bioethanol.

However, the technology needs further development before it can show its full potential.  Governments can and should assist do so visit this Anaerobic Digestion site here to learn more and help to get this technology into the mainstream.

Recent Political Debates Over Motorcycles & ATVs

Monday, August 13th, 2007

In recent years there have been many political debated on Capital Hill surrounding motorcycles and ATVs.  Thoese debates typically focus around saftey and sometime around import laws.

A more recent debate has been on the importation of Chinese ATVs and motorcycles.  See these ATVs do not meet the same saftey standards as their Japenese counterparts and they also offer no training.

Many times these Chinese atvs and motorcycles are being sold on the street which is a big different than the large motorcycle and atv dealers selling Japanese ATVs with motorcycle loans and ATV financing.

One thing is for sure these debates will continue as long as there is still percieved saftey issues with ATVs and motorcycles.

This is a sorta interesting article about the recent history of dogs in politics. I don’t know if you HAVE to have a dog to be President of the United States – but if you look at the statistics, it certainly seems to help!

African American History – Teaches Values Across Generations

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

I have always thought of myself as a rebel, but after studying a little bit of the history of African Americans, I realize it is my parents that are the rebels. They were willing to risk everything – their safety, their freedom, even their life – to make things better for me and my generation. Studying African American history has taught me that I should be grateful to them for the sacrifices that they made. More importantly, it has taught me that it is crucial that I make the most of myself. Being aware of African American history means that I know how hard it was to get to where we are today. I must not squander the chances that I have been given.

Should I Join Pre Paid Legal?

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Some individuals are very satisfied with the services received for the money invested, whereas others are disenchanted. In some cases, individuals found their coverage limited by their policy or by the specific service they required. In other cases, members’ coverage met legal needs perfectly in both preventive and remedial situations. For you, one of the best ways to determine if a pre-paid legal plan is necessary is to research thoroughly what the policy offers.

Going Vegetarian Is A Good Decision?

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

As a prospective vegetarian, you probably question
whether or not it really matters if you stop eating meat.
You might wonder how much of a difference one additional
vegetarian can make.

And while it might be true that one vegetarian won’t make a
huge statistical difference in a world of meat-eaters–
and while it is also true that one more vegetarian
probably isn’t going to turn the tide in the movement–
you can do a lot as an individual that will be good for
you and good for hundreds of animals animals.

High Cholesterol Foods

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

High cholesterol foods with high saturated fat content can increase your LDL (bad) cholesterol level unlike any other in your food. Decreasing your saturated fat intake is a big step towards reducing your cholesterol levels. This also point out that a low cholesterol diet from low cholesterol foods are not as harmful as the saturated fat content.

Be Smart When Using Discussion Boards

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Discussion boards are not all happy places. On almost any board you find, there are people who are looking for trouble. These are commonly called trolls. Trolls go from board to board trying to stir up trouble just for the sake of doing so. They may go onto a board for that sole purpose and nothing more. Trolls and other troublemakers will even target discussion boards you may think are tame, like one for The Wiggles or other children’s shows. Many have found discussion boards as places to scam others, so use care in your communications …

Find Address From Phone Number – The Technology that Makes Some Paranoid

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

The possibility that collecting such information can only facilitate steps that follow to find an address from a phone number, get court approval… and visit said address to continue more justified surveillance.  And, what’s more, the irony is not lost on readers who read, two entries later on the same news day, that an FBI initiative, by way of evidence and cases thus far, reveals the “wrongdoing by public officials at all levels of government is deeply rooted….â€?  Again, WHY are those very same officials accessing the call-history of Joe Blow?

In fact, just the other day I was discussing the practice of clear communication whereby one person (a.k.a. the speaker) sends information, the receiver (or listener) takes in the information and then reiterates in his/her own words, and the sender confirms that the listener received it the way it was intended. Are Online Background Checks Ethical Correct?

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Most employers are interested in a complete online background check to ensure their new hires are honest and trustworthy. Not everyone divulges the skeletons in their closets, especially if they might not get the position because of a past indiscretion. Parents interested in hiring a new babysitter or nanny would certainly be interested in knowing if an applicant is a registered sex offender or if other criminal charges exist. Another example of a situation where an online background check is warranted, involves women (or men for that matter) who meet dates through an online dating service or in singles’ chat rooms… read the full article at online background check.
