How to Resolve a Conflict at Work

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Human beings are social creatures, but that doesn’t always mean we are the nicest to each other. Even though we all admit that we’re “in this together”, sometimes you want to just rip someone’s face off, or, at the least, hope something bad will happen to their face. This can be an especially big problem at high stress arenas, most specifically, the workplace. For years, some of the worst and most violent disagreements take place at, or because of, conflict at work. But this is a pattern you do not need to fall victim to. Social scientists have spent years on ways to resolve conflict at work. Here are a couple of their tips.

First, to diffuse a conflict at work, you must try to find and emphasize common ground. Most of the time, a conflict at work arises out of a disagreement on a particular issue. Usually, this disagreement underlies a very similar mentality. People rarely disagree with each other in spite when there is something to be gained. Most of the time, this disagreement stems from different perspectives or opinions. However, the goal behind the opinions are almost always the same; saving money, expanding, increasing profit potential or efficiency. It is not the “why” that causes conflict, but the “how.” When you find yourself in this conflict, remind all involved of this; “how’s” can be altered, added and subtracted, but the “why” is crucial to any cohesive organization.

Be direct. Many times during a conflict at work, or anywhere else for that matter, a conflict draws out emotions. People have different emotional responses to a conflict and, everyone, when feeling such a cocktail of negative and angry emotions, have trouble seeing and thinking clearly, even you. This leads to a preponderence of misunderstandings which highlight and further enrage the conflict. It is important in these times to be direct, concise and clear, even obviously so. So many conflicts could be diffused simply by assuming that things need to be clarified.

Finally, a crucial part is to try to solve your conflict at work by yourself. Bringing in co-workers is damaging; it informs them that you need there help for a basic task and lowers their respect for you accordingly. Even worse is bringing in your boss or manager. These people are usually busy and this distraction (which is how they will see it) will long after be associated with you. In a negative way. Finally, the person with whom you are in conflict will remember that you cannot fight your own battles. Whenever possible, address these conflicts without help and simply, quietly, and quickly.

A conflict at work is almost inevitable. Another point to remember is that other people are listening, either directly, or through gossip. Conduct yourself in a professional manner and follow the tips about to handle virtually any conflict at work that might arise.

What Keeps Chicago Law School up on the Heap?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Ranked as the second school in the country in terms of educational quality, Chicago law school undoubtedly stands out from the pack. So how do they ensure they remain top despite getting a lot of rivalry from such institutions as Yale and Harvard? Chicago law school has made a decision and put it as its top priority quality teaching at the law school. Though this has brought about deterioration in other aspects of the school, law in the institution has continued to excel. This is largely attributed to the law school going the other way as other elite schools took a completely different turn.

Chicago law school took a different turn by cinching its belt while other institutions made their curriculums more flexible. While these institutions enabled for a more ‘crossover’ program where they created more opportunities for students to integrate other programs, Chicago law school remained unmoved in this change. In fact, it was required that students take even more classes within the law school. During this time when many institutions welcomed the classroom internet which seemed to threaten the professor-student dialogue, the university yanked out the network cables and removed wireless connections in all rooms. As you can imagine, this did not go well with the students. However, the university seemed to care less, at least, they did not want the quality of instruction within the law school to be diluted with flexible classes and wireless access. That however is not the only reason why Chicago law school has stayed elite.

The university also seems to have continued with their quest of finding and nurturing new potential professors and giving them a chance to shine in this ‘think tank’ atmosphere. The hiring committee is composed of elite professors in their own right who are also highly engaged. Furthermore, it is considered one of the first institutions to implement a mandatory legal writing class that is called the Bigelow Program. This program is staffed with aspiring academics who show great potential. Some of the university’s best new professors have also come from the Bigelow Program.

Even with a lot of the professors going to other top-ranked institutions, Chicago law school still maintains a list of emerging legal minds that should keep them on top of the academic heap for years to come, in addition to many stars of yesteryears who continue to make a great contribution to the institution’s high education quality.

How companies are selling themselves

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

With the world becoming a global village and as economies move from distinct national economies to global ones, so has the marketing of the products being traded. Companies as well as individuals can now trade internationally, selling their products and services in virtually borderless environments. Global marketing strategies especially those employed on the internet have made small companies into multinational corporations while multinational companies have found themselves competing with once small and medium companies. Thanks to the internet, any marketing strategy applied online can reach millions in minutes. Furthermore, any strategies quickly become global marketing strategies that can be used by any organization or company.

The internet has seen all forms of marketing tactics explode in recent years creating an entirely new industry in online advertising that did not exist just more than a decade ago. Online advertising is just one of these strategies that have proved effective. Marketers use all available channels and mediums to reach as many people as possible in the shortest time possible. Email marketing, newsletters and use of banner ads, these are just some of the marketing strategies being employed and their effectiveness has unquestionably become undeniable. Viral marketing strategies also continued to offer targeted traffic for many websites.

The social networks that have become the platform for viral marketing have seen their use grow from being simple social sites to powerful marketing platforms. Brand awareness in social networks seemed to have become effective as one of the many global marketing strategies that continue to flourish despite the economic downturn. Social network sites are usually used as linkages to lead visitors to individual sites that offer services or goods to clients. Alternatively, links from these sites can lead to landing pages that offer promotions or that announce new products and services. However they come, these global marketing strategies are powerful tools on the web.

In our information age, nothing sells as fast as information. This means that if you want to increase sales in your business, you have to offer information. Here is where another strategy comes in – blogging. Blogs, originally private pages, are now used by many businesses to lure visitors to their sites. Blogs are also effective since they are used by search engines to index sites linking to and from them. There are many other global marketing strategies not mentioned here that are also being used. As these strategies evolve, one thing will continue to be the driving force – competition.

Are Books About History Historically Accurate?

Monday, November 15th, 2010

You might wonder how relevant history is to the present. After all, it’s in the past. But you might have heard that you’re doomed to repeat history if you don’t learn from it. You should at least learn enough about it to pass history class. Joking aside, history is an important part of our lives because the past is what leads up to how things are now. If elements of the past were changed or if things had run along a different course, the world that we live in today wouldn’t exist. It’s because of what we’ve learned from our ancestors that we’re able to progress. They forged the way for us so that we know what not to do, and what hasn’t been done yet.

But being in the past, history only exists now in our minds and in the books about history that are left behind or continue to be written. So the accuracy of our historical knowledge really depends on how we recall things and how we record them, and unfortunately these methods aren’t completely reliable. We have the power to rewrite the past in terms of rectifying past mistakes in the future, but we also have the power to rewrite books about history so that they recall past events erroneously.

Historically, books about history haven’t always told the whole truth. For example, Christopher Columbus’ atrocious treatment of the Native Americans upon his arrival was frequently omitted from history book text. So was the fact that it was the Native Americans who saved the Pilgrims by providing them food at Thanksgiving, not the other way around. We don’t hear much about Woodrow Wilson’s racism or the fact that Helen Keller grew up to be a radical Socialist. Outside of America, it took a while for Japanese history to acknowledge the Rape of Nanking and some text has denied the Holocaust. Today, few people would deny the occurrence of these two events, yet we depend on books about history for knowledge regarding them. History might exist in some people’s memories, but in the future they will pass on and only books and word of mouth will remain. It makes you aware of how precarious the nature of historical knowledge really is.

How much can history books really document? There’s only so much their pages can hold, and inevitably some details will slip through the cracks. People of the past didn’t always leave behind specific descriptions of what happened to them, what they were like, what they were thinking, so we’ll never truly know. Yet it doesn’t seem plausible to toss out all the history books in existence because of their possible fallacies.

Representative John Boehner and Drugs and alcohol

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Is Representative John Boehner crazy, blind, illiterate or just plain stupid. Does the man hire staffers who can’t read. If the supposed republican leader of the house doesn’t know the facts is it his fault? Obviously the man needs to fire all his staffers or get his vision checked as it would seem he can’t read and relies on lies from others for his supposed facts.

The following is a statement by Mr. Boehner about our health care system. The statement was made a few days ago but I lost the url.

“I believe that the health care bill that was enacted by the current Congress will kill jobs in America, ruin the best health care system in the world, and bankrupt our country,” House Minority Leader John Boehner, the presumptive new House speaker, said in a news conference. “That means we have to do everything we can to try to repeal this bill and replace it with common sense reforms to bring down the cost of health care.”

I was just reading this report on alcohol abuse being more damaging than heroin abuse or crack abuse. I didn’t need a report to tell me that. When you’re a product of a couple of child abusing alcoholics. I also know the relationship and family damage they did lasts a lifetime.

Anyway, I had a thought about drugs and alcohol and cigarettes. When I smoke cigarettes I pay one hell of a lot of taxes because the govt is illegally trying to protect me from myself. Taxes on alcohol are relatively low compared to cigarettes. Point being alcohol kills other people than just the drinkers. We have a horrible drunk driving problem in this country and drunks behind the wheel kill and maim 10s of thousands of people every year.

Homeschooling Pros and Cons

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Homeschooling sometimes evokes an image of strict parents, religious zealousness, or kids that are socially deficient. Homeschooling can take on a wide variety of forms. It can be instituted in different formats, for different reasons and by different people. There are homeschooling pros and cons—homeschooling can have its advantages over mainstream education, but inevitably there’s a trade-off and there can be disadvantages as well.

Generally, homeschooling is born out of a desire to give children a different education than what society offers, or sometimes there’s a reason why this is seen as necessary. Some parents are dissatisfied with the pace of standard education and want to provide a curriculum to their children that will challenge them and fulfill their potential. Others disagree with what is taught at school and want their kids to learn what they believe is correct. Yet others pull their kids out of school due to bullying and sometimes actors learn at home because standard education is hard to fit into their busy schedules. There are many reasons why homeschooling would be considered as an option.

Homeschooling pros and cons come up in how and what children are taught. Parents can give their kids an education at an advanced level that promotes excelled learning. They can also benefit from more individual attention than kids in classrooms might get, and they are less susceptible to issues like peer pressure that kids at school deal with. On the other hand, homeschooling can sometimes inhibit learning by censoring certain topics or showing a bias towards certain areas over others. Homeschooled children might be exposed to only one point of view without being able to consider and compare other perspectives.

Some express concern that homeschooled children don’t get the chance to socialize as much as kids who learn in classrooms with other kids. This is not always the case. Life isn’t necessarily restricted to the home, and homeschooled children have a life outside of education just like other kids do. Also, there are homeschooling programs in which kids can learn and interact with other homeschooled children in the way that classmates would at school.

Homeschooling pros and cons should be considered when deciding whether to homeschool your kid. Take into account the environment children will be in, what they will learn and how you will teach them. The wishes of the child should also be taken into consideration. Kids learn best in an environment that they enjoy. The most important thing is that your children receive an education that will prepare them for life, which is possible to achieve through either homeschooling or mainstream education.
