Higher education – Great thing to have

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Through the years I have encountered all kinds of people. Some people are accepting of others, some people are only comfortable being around people that think and act like themselves. I enjoy spending time with a wide variety of people. I have found that we all are basically the same. We all want to be accepted for whom we are and like to be around others that let us be ourselves.

As a reflect back on my life I realize that the group of people that are the most snobbish and judgmental are the people that are involved in higher education. When I entered college I was exposed to thoughts and ideas that were very different from what I had experienced in the small rural high school where I had received my diploma. I knew that the world was much bigger than the small rural community that my parents called home. We had traveled extensively as a family and both of my parents had received higher education after leaving high school. What I was not prepared for was the closed minded view of the world that the professors in each department expressed.

Each of the department heads seemed to think that they would impress our young minds by their slanted view of the world. I soon found that many of the professors chose to stay at the institute for higher education so that they would have a captive audience to listen to them. I knew that I wanted a degree and in order to achieve it I needed to attend the classes and perform on the examines, but I thought the whole higher education experience was quite a disappointment. I received my real education during my field experiences as well as my internship. Working in the field and shadowing people that were actually doing the jobs versus sitting in a classroom listening to a professor spout out their opinions was a very rewarding experience. I know that the thought is that to expose students to general education classes helps them have a more rounded view of life as well as a greater base of knowledge, but our higher education system needs to look at clearing our some of the professors and have real people that are working in their field of expertise teach the classes. The biggest down fall in our higher education system is tenure. It seems that once a teacher reaches tenure they become stagnant in their teaching style and settle in for the money. This is a sad commentary on the people that are suppose to be molding the youth of today.

Child Health Insurance

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Children are always going to need to have access to medical care. Though we are born in need of our mothers protection, we also need vaccinations that keep us safe from diseases that killed many in the past. We also have new conditions, diseases, and illnesses that are here and now that we need protection from. If you have children, you have to have some type of child health insurance so that your child can get all the preventative care and sick visits that he or she needs to stay healthy.

As important as child health insurance is, there are many families that do not have this. If you are a family that has health insurance through your job, you should make the most of it when you need it. Some people pay in for years and years and never use their policy, only to find that something comes up and they are glad that they kept it. Having a baby is expensive, having premature baby is ultra expensive. Having a child with a flu can cost you a bit, having a child in the hospital with complications from the flu will cost you more. Even if you do not use your insurance much, keep it for those very reasons.

If you do not have child health insurance through your employer, you may be on your own. Depending on which state you live in, you may be able to get child health insurance through that state. Though some think of this as charity and do not want to get it, it is something put in place for those that do not have insurance through work and that can not afford a policy out of pocket. That can be expensive. With state insurance, you will pay according to your income, and many families may find that they can get this insurance for no cost, or a few dollars a week.

You may think that this type of child health insurance is going to be substandard, but that opposite is true in many cases. The insurance that is held by each state can be better than the insurance that your employer gets through the very same companies the state uses. That does not mean you should use free insurance if you have regular insurance (and you can be sure they will not allow you to do this), but it does mean that you do not have to worry that your coverage will be lacking. You should be just fine with the coverage you get through your state government.

If you are concerned that your child health insurance is lacking, or if you are not sure what is covered, talk with someone at the company that holds your policy. They are going to be helpful, but you may still have trouble understanding the terms of your policy. When that happens, ask to speak to a manager, and keep asking for someone else until you find someone that can spell out the terms of your child health insurance policy in words that make sense to you so you know what is covered and what is not. That saves you a lot of headaches when you statements start coming in the mail.

President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act

Monday, September 27th, 2010

In 2001, Congress approved the No Child Left Behind Act, and President George W. Bush signed it into law. The No Child Left Behind Act, also known as NLCB, seeks to improve public education in the United States. It mandates that all states must test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and mathematics. Schools must then demonstrate improvement in their test scores, or risk losing federal funding. The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act is to bring every student in America to proficiency in reading in math by 2014.

So, is it working? Are students learning more? Is the achievement gap closing? The answer is: yes, and no. Under NCLB, test scores have increased for the lowest performing students in the nation, almost across the board. According to state testing results, it is unquestionable that the achievement gap between white and non-white students is getting smaller. On the other hand, the No Child Left Behind Act has actually had an adverse effect on the highest achieving students. Since the act was signed into law, test scores have shown a steady and disturbing trend: scores for the highest performing students have consistently decreased.

As we approach the 2014 deadline set by the No Child Left Behind Act, it seems less and less likely that the goal of 100% proficiency can actually be accomplished. Some critics have insisted that such a goal is impossible to achieve under any circumstances; children vary in their native intellectual capacity and it is simply incorrect to assume that they can all universally achieve at the same academic level. The No Child Left Behind Act insists that all children are capable of proficiency – although it is important to note that the law itself does not define proficiency or set any actual standard for measuring it.

Indeed, the lack of any specific standard is perhaps the real flaw of NCLB. The law mandates that every state must set its own standards, and create its own tests for measuring whether students are performing up to those standards. So what passes as proficient in Mississippi might well be considered under-performing in Massachusetts. Furthermore, although the standards tend to remain the same, the tests administered according the No Child Left Behind Act change from year-to-year (of course, since it would make no sense to give the exact same test each year). As a result, there is an inevitable variation in test difficulty levels. Yet the No Child Left Behind Act insists that states must compare the data from one year’s test with the data from other years. In other words, a state may find that fourth-grade reading scores got higher from 2007 to 2008, and then even higher in 2009. It sounds very promising. But did the students get better at reading, or did the tests get easier? NCLB contains no provision for guaranteeing that the latter explanation does not occur.

1099 tax form guide

Friday, September 24th, 2010

IRS forms are used in the United States as part of a system where revenue information is kept track of and analyzed. A 1099 tax form is part of the Internal Revenue Service and is used by freelance workers who earn and are paid at least $600 for the last twelve months.

Freelance workers who use 1099 tax forms have diverse occupations. Waiters, writers, actors, trainers, electricians, plumbers, designers etc., all must report types of income that is not regulated by payroll system. This is a requirement to work in the United States.

When freelance workers are hired by employers, many times they are asked to fill out an I-9 form, which is then kept and submitted when necessary. When the employer files taxes at the end of the tax year, the freelance employers must declare what they have been paid using the 1099 tax form and sometimes must pay taxes since no tax money has been taken from their wages all year long.

Filling out a 1099 tax form is a daunting task to many people who are not sure what all the boxes are for and do not wan to complete it incorrectly and then have to pay out more money than necessary. There are many resources online, in books and at consulting agencies that can help people fill out and complete the 1099 tax form.

Failing to fill out and file a 1099 tax form can be interpreted as someone refusing or neglecting to pay his or her taxes. There is an official Internal Revenue Services website with all the parameters and stipulations listed so people can take responsibility for their taxes.

Because so many companies and individuals file so many 1099 tax forms each year, in 2008, different versions of the form can out to be used depending on the circumstances. For example, a 1099-R form is used for Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Insurance Contracts, IRAs and Retirement Plans while a 1099-SA form is used for Distributions From an HAS, Medicare Advantage MSA or Archer MSA. There are twenty-three versions of the 1099 tax form to use.

Because so many companies file these 1099 tax forms, new rules have been implemented to save paper. There are resources available to submit forms and file electronically, saving time, postage and paper. New processes are always being developed to make the process easier so the forms are filed correctly.

Sarah Palin, the Idiot Elf

Monday, September 20th, 2010

When the US President or congress or anyone involved in the administration of govt decides we need to go to war what we need to do is make sure each and everyone of their children between 17 and 55 are the ones in the first wave of ground troops to go into the country.

When they decide not to pass bills to help the poor and impoverished they should all be made to go live in some of the shacks the poor live in that they call housing. They should have to live on food stamps and what little welfare they can get.

When they decide not to pass a major health overhaul they should all be forced to get rid of their insurance and live without insurance. I wonder how the idiots in congress would do if they had to live under some of the laws these fools pass.

Sarah Palin aka IDIOT ELF has many sanity issues to deal with. Perhaps it was living so close to the North Pole and Santa that makes her an idiot elf. The woman doesn’t have the brains to pour piss out of a boot even if the instructions were on the heel.

The only thing the idiot elf is good at is inflaming the psycho rabble that thinks shes a saviour. Lol, closer to the anti christ in my humble opinion. She would make a perfect tea party candidate. All mouth, no brains.

Where was the tea party and the elf when the republicans were taking our liberties away with the patriot act? Now these fools want to bitch that the health care bill takes their rights away.

2008 senate race in the United States

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The 2008 senate race was a telling victory for the democratic party of the united states of America. After having lost control of the senate in 2004, the party experience a renewal of vigor for the 2006 midterm races. That vigor was taken a step further in 2008, and the outcome was decisive: The democrats ended up with 60 seats out of 100, making the senate filibuster-proof and solidifying control of the congress’s senior body. In the end the democrats gained eight seats out of the 35 being contested, a staggering level of dominance in an era where public servants are usually set in their seat for life.

For their success in the 2008 senate race, the democrats have many to thank, starting with presidential candidate (and eventual winner) Barack Obama. Obama was the first national candidate to really understand the power of social networking and the internet as a tool not only for gaining support, but raising money and volunteer hours as well. Obama’s popularity and ability to get young people to connect to his message was felt “down-ticket”, as a majority of Obama voters ended up going straight democrat all the way down the line. That larger turn-out propelled many new senators into their seats.

Also to thank in the 2008 senate race were the republicans themselves, who were struggling to gain any type of momentum or message after eight years of rubber-stamping the nihlistic policies of the Bush/Cheney regime. That public dissatisfaction with the GOP combined with an inordinately large amount of ethics and sex scandals to put democrats in a position to win seats which, just months earlier, were considered untouchable.

One example is now-ex senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, who had been serving as a senator for longer than any other person in US history. Stevens was a heavy favorite until it came out that he’d accepted gifts – a new house valued at 250,000 dollars being one of them – from companies that had lobbied him for public contracts. Stevens was indicted just two months before the election, allowing Marc Begich to claim the seat for the democrats.

Also defeated was Minnesota senator Norm Coleman, who lost the closest race of the cycle to former Saturday Night Live performer and writer Al Franken. Coleman made legal challenges to the result that lasted well into the summer of 2009, but in the end the republican governor of Minnesota deemed that the election results were legitimate and certified Franken as the winner.

The final win of the 2008 senate race came from a “race” that wasn’t even being run when republican senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched parties from Republican to Democrat. Specter is a moderate republican – a dying breed – who felt the party no longer represented his views. Specter’s defection gave democrats the magical “60″ seats, allowing them unprecedented control of the senate floor.

2004 presidential election

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

The 2004 presidential election isn’t quite ancient history, but it often feels that way. The contest between incumbent George W. Bush and challenger John Forbes Kerry was bitter, long-lasting and hard-fought, and in the end proved to be a disappointment to many, many Americans.

It was the fifty-fifth election in United States history, and Bush was vying to become the second consecutive sitting president to win a second term, as well as the third out of the last four. The only sitting president to not win a second term in that interim was Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, who was defeated by William Jefferson Clinton in 1992′s presidential election. Clinton would of course go on to defeat Bob Dole and Ross Perot – a third party candidate who ran in both 1992 and 1996 – in the 1996 presidential election.

Bush, of course, did win a second term in the 2004 presidential election and went on to govern until 2008, as dictated by the United STates’ term limit regulations when it comes to the legislative branch. The final popular vote of the 2004 presidential election was relatively close, as Bush won by just over 3,000,000 votes. His final total of 62,040,610 was, at that time, the most votes any presidential candidate had ever received in an election. Ironically, Kerry’s total of 59,028,444 was at that time the second most votes any candidate had received in an election – even more than Ronald Reagan in 1984, when Reagan won everywhere but challenger Walter Mondale’s home state of Minnesota and Washington, D.C. itself.

The 2004 presidential election also provided a stark illustration of the widening gap between “blue state” America and “red state” America. “Blue states” tend to be progressive states found on the coasts and in the Great Lakes region. These states are characterized by a higher rate of education and financial success, as well as more progressive political and social thinking by their inhabitants. These also tend to be the states that pay more in taxes to the federal government than they receive back in aid. Kerry won these states handily.

“Red states” are predominantly southern and plains states. These states are characterized by a lower rate of education and fewer people with full sets of teeth and chromosomes. They are also home to many NASCAR races Flat Earth Society members and mega-churches. Naturally this was George W. Bush’s home territory, and he was able to win these states in a clean sweep and, eventually the 2004 presidential election itself by a count of 286 votes to 251 votes in the electoral college.

The 2000 election and your rights as a citizen

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

The 2000 election is, to this day, the most controversial presidential election in the history of the United States of America. It was contested between Al Gore, then the Vice President of the United States under sitting president William Jefferson “Bill” Clinton, and Texas governor George W. Bush.

At the time the United States itself was in what most folks now consider to be a golden era of peace and prosperity. The internet bubble was slowly deflating rather than bursting, yet Clinton’s management of the budget and national debt had put the counttry in a position of financial strength that, had it been managed prudently, would have stood us in good stead for generations. As a result of that, quality of life and economic opportunity had both shot through the roof and Gore was a heavy favorite to win the presidency.

The republicans decision to nominate Bush, a man who former Texas governor Ann Richards had once quipped “was born with a silver foot in his mouth,” addressing both Bush’s privileged Ivy League elitist upbringing as well as his propensity for misspeaking rather stupidly, seemed to make Gore an even bigger favorite. Most people upon seeing Bush on the national stage for the first time felt he was impossibly out of his depth, and was clearly a figurehead or puppet being manipulated by the right wing elite.

But the 2000 election wasn’t to go off as people expected. Gore ran an incredibly bad campaign, letting a mid-summer 20 point lead narrow into a dead heat as election day neared. Bush even pulled ahead in most polls with a week left, but Gore’s aggressive campaigning allowed him to tighten the gap (though of all the pollsters only Zogby had it as a dead heat) and, on the day of the election, it was anybody’s game.

The day of the election came, and it was clear that Gore had won. The final popular vote favored Gore by more than half a million – 50,999,897 to 50,456,002.

Sadly, rigged results had made the state of Florida itself a toss-up and rather than have a decisive winner on election day, a series of legal challenges meant that there could be no winner declared for a full month. The controversy that came of this legal absurdity led to one of the saddest affairs in the history of the united states, and was ended only when the Supreme Court – not the people – declared Bush the winner of Florida’s 23 electoral votes and, therefore, the 2000 election itself.

Conservative Politics And Liberal Theory

Monday, September 6th, 2010

John Locke was an atheist who believed in the supremacy of secular humanism – in other words, he believed that if humans were allowed to proceed unencumbered through life by either theocratic superstition or governmental interference, that we could achieve our greatest potential as citizens of the world. His theories were influential from Russia to the Americas, and had a profound impact upon the founding fathers of the United States, with special notation for his contributions to liberal theory. And that’s the funny part: Conservative politics have their roots in liberal theory. Conservatism as it is now, of course, is not Locke’s conservatism at all, but that kind of irony tends to be lost on people who consider themselves conservatives.

Democratic Politics After JFK

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Many historians concerned with democratic politics see Kennedy’s brief term as president as the tipping point when it comes to democratic politics. It was the end of the “party within a party” aspect of the democratic party, where the southern “dixiecrats” would work for social ends that were directly contradictory to what northern democrats were working for.

In the forty-seven years since Kennedy was assassinated, most democratic politics have been able to align on certain topics. The democratic party is nearly unanimous in supporting a woman’s right to choose. The democratic party is also against, generally speaking, engaging in preemptive overseas combat of the kind the republican party is so wont to get into.

The Health Reform Law

Monday, September 6th, 2010

One of the major goals of the Health Reform Law that President Obama signed in March, 2010, was to facilitate accessible and affordable insurance to all Americans. Currently, most Americans working for large corporations will receive a health insurance plan as a benefits option when they are employed. Working with large numbers, the large corporations are able to pull out lower premiums for their employees. Most employees of large corporations find these premium payments affordable and participate. Not so with self-employed individuals or small businesses. They do not have the numbers to get the discounts of larger organizations. For this reason, many individuals and small business owners and employees are medically uninsured.

In the United States, the traditional provider of health insurance has been businesses. Seen as the primary cause of health problems, business was called to provide insurance to employees as early as the days of Teddy Roosevelt. Although business is not the primary cause of human illness (it was so perceived at a time when capitalism was being blamed for everything), business has shouldered the responsibility, viewing it as one of those requirements for doing business in the U.S. that can’t be avoided and that could have positive side-effects for the business that insures its people. For one thing, health insurance benefits are a powerful recruitment incentive for those valuable employees that no business can do without. This attraction is quite doable for large corporations, but small businesses, not having the numbers to command lower premiums for their employees, are left out in the cold. They cannot attract those valuable employees because they can’t provide affordable insurance.

While the Health Reform Law doesn’t aim to make small businesses more competitive with bigger businesses, by providing a way for small businesses to get insurance for their employees at near the same prices big corporations can, the law has given a boost to small business employee recruitment. The intent to create exchanges for health insurance will enable small business to join together in an exchange and so increase their numbers, thereby qualifying an exchange to receive the discounts larger corporations now receive.

President Obama has assured the American public that these exchanges will be built throughout the country. In these exchanges, various health care insurance providers will offer their products at rates only the big corporations are used to seeing. These exchanges will be health care insurance ‘marketplaces’. Small businesses won’t be forced to take a ‘one size fits all’ type of plan, but plans that best suit the individual business environment, and its employees. Small business will be further encouraged to purchase health insurance for their employees, with tax incentives that should, combined with low exchange rates, enable all small businesses to provide insurance to their employees at rates comparable to those the big corporations offer.

These exchanges will not only benefit the small business, but the also self-employed individuals. These individuals are currently the largest uninsured group among working people, simply because a single individual has to pay more for medical insurance than a group. Now, self-employed individuals can team up with other self-employed individuals and small businesses to get the low cost, comprehensive insurance the corporate worker now enjoys.

Don’t expect to purchase health insurance tomorrow from one of these exchanges. It will take time to get them going. Don’t wait to purchase health insurance until the exchanges come. Purchase health insurance now – you may need it. When exchanges take effect, then you’ll be able to purchase health insurance at affordable prices.

Voice Your Opinion With Political T Shirts

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

I kind of have mixed feelings about politics. On the one hand, I don’t get so wrapped up in the issues that I research all the major players’ positions or write to my senator about which way I think he should vote on pending legislation. On the other hand, I do take my responsibilities of living in a free democratic society seriously and show this by voting in both local and national elections whenever they come up. I think this is a satisfactory compromise between spending way too much time dissecting everything politicians say and complete apathy.

While I may be just lukewarm on politics in general, I have to admit that I love political t shirts. These are always available, but tend to be more popular during presidential election years or whenever a rising star emerges on the national scene. Political t shirts are a fun way to express my opinions about a candidate or issue without having to say a whole lot, which is why I make sure to browse around for new additions on a regular basis.

The best place to find political t shirts is online, where various websites sell them at reasonable prices. Sometimes the sites lean only one way in terms of what kind of products they stock, so certain web stores are good for liberal political t shirts, while you’d have to go elsewhere for conservative goods. Either way, you can definitely find what you’re looking for on the internet.

Most online retailers carry apparel that will appeal to Republicans and Democrats alike, which means you can buy Sarah Palin political t shirts right alongside Barack Obama tees. If you’re still harboring some ill-will or anger about the last administration, then you’ll be happy to learn there are quite a few anti Bush political t shirts on the market that can help you voice your disdain. The same goes for the Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Reagan, Carter, and Nixon administrations as well. In other words, you can find tees to suit your views no matter what era you’re most interested in.

If for some reason you can’t find that perfect shirt that says precisely what you want, there are stores out there that let you create your own slogan and slap it on a piece of clothing for a fair price. This is a great option for people that like to wear funny political t shirts, especially if you’re talented at coming up with a bunch of one-liners.

Most people have deeply held beliefs about politics, and take every major issue very seriously. For those of us that want to lighten thing up a bit, political t shirts are a fun way to show that you’re involved in the national conversation — but that you can retain a sense of humor, too.
