Higher education – Great thing to have
Thursday, September 30th, 2010
Through the years I have encountered all kinds of people. Some people are accepting of others, some people are only comfortable being around people that think and act like themselves. I enjoy spending time with a wide variety of people. I have found that we all are basically the same. We all want to be accepted for whom we are and like to be around others that let us be ourselves.
As a reflect back on my life I realize that the group of people that are the most snobbish and judgmental are the people that are involved in higher education. When I entered college I was exposed to thoughts and ideas that were very different from what I had experienced in the small rural high school where I had received my diploma. I knew that the world was much bigger than the small rural community that my parents called home. We had traveled extensively as a family and both of my parents had received higher education after leaving high school. What I was not prepared for was the closed minded view of the world that the professors in each department expressed.
Each of the department heads seemed to think that they would impress our young minds by their slanted view of the world. I soon found that many of the professors chose to stay at the institute for higher education so that they would have a captive audience to listen to them. I knew that I wanted a degree and in order to achieve it I needed to attend the classes and perform on the examines, but I thought the whole higher education experience was quite a disappointment. I received my real education during my field experiences as well as my internship. Working in the field and shadowing people that were actually doing the jobs versus sitting in a classroom listening to a professor spout out their opinions was a very rewarding experience. I know that the thought is that to expose students to general education classes helps them have a more rounded view of life as well as a greater base of knowledge, but our higher education system needs to look at clearing our some of the professors and have real people that are working in their field of expertise teach the classes. The biggest down fall in our higher education system is tenure. It seems that once a teacher reaches tenure they become stagnant in their teaching style and settle in for the money. This is a sad commentary on the people that are suppose to be molding the youth of today.
