A certain ingredient in tooth paste may disturb your sense of taste.

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

It’s a question you may never have asked, but if you’ve ever brushed your teeth before you’ve had a glass of juice, you’ll know why we had to seek professional advice. David Cannell is the scientific spokesperson for Questacon, “It’s because of a certain ingredient in toothpaste called sodium laurel sulfate. It actually blocks sweet sensors. All the other taste bud cells in your mouth are firing away nicely, but the receptors which pick up the sweet sensors are not working anymore. Not only does it block the sweet sensors, it enhances the sour and bitter, so you get this massive influx of sour and bitter taste coming through the mouth.” David says tastebuds are a very interesting part of the body, “They’re the little bumps on the top of your tongue. They look like a tiny onion, if you look at it with a high powered microscope. Each tastebud, which we have about ten thousand of, has about fifty different taste cells.” “The tastebud itself goes through such a heavy process of tasting things left, right and centre, it gets too much for them. They actually die after about two weeks. But they generally grow back, but they don’t always grow back. As you get older and older, your tastebuds do generally die off. You can be left with only two or three thousand.” “Kids have incredible taste sensitivity”, David explains, “something that is really quite strong to taste they might consider completely disgusting. When you grow old, you get used to it.” David laughs, “I think the message in here is not to feed children vegetables at the dinner table!

Acne skin care treatment secrets revealed.

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Severe acne problems torment many teens as well as older men and women. Are you one of them? There are many treatments available, some of which may come as a surprise to you. If you have been wanting to research different acne treatment options but just haven’t had the time to hit the books, surf the web, and study up, then the following list of treatments will help guide you into finding what might work best for you.

1. Anti-biotic treatments are warranted by those people that have severe blemishes caused by pimples that are clustered together. This is a long term approach. The types of antibiotics include; but are not limited to: Tetracycline, Minocycline, Doxycycline, Erythromycin, and Bactrim.
2. Hormonal medications such as birth control pills are a way that many women can treat her acne. Some women have acne problems from too many androgens (male hormones) in their system. In order to balance this out, certain birth control pills can be administered that will either reduce the level of androgens circulating in the bloodstream, block the androgens from reaching their cellular receptors, or prevent the formation of androgens all-together.
3. Injectable steroids may be used for that stray acne cyst. The steroidal solution often used for this type of application is called triamcinolone (Kenalog). The good news is that this can be a great quick fix for small isolated acne problems but it cannot be used to treat a widespread acne issue.
4. Topical therapies including creams, lotions, or wipes are a very popular and easy way to attack a nasty acne problem. They are simple to use, by just rubbing them on, and are available from stores, online shopping, or by television ads.
5. Antibiotic Topical therapies also work well and are a step above the standard topicals mentioned previously. An example would be Clindamycin or Sodium sulfacetamide.

From Tomboy to A Modern Woman

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

When I was young, I was a tomboy.

I played with the other boys in the street in games like soccer and cricket. I wasn’t remotely interested in dolls or anything girly. I didn’t want to do skipping games, in fact everything the girls in the neighborhood did looked very boring. My toys were also of the tomboy persuasion and I had 10 toys which I played with the most.

Rainy days were often spent inside with my fort.

It was a well built fort with look out posts. The cavalry soldiers guarded it against the Indian invaders. It was probably the best of my favorite 10 toys. I also had a farm, which had pigs, horses, sheep and cattle. There was a big tree and a well. I made the farmer and his wife work very hard, milking the cows and driving the animals to market.

I also had racing cars which were a bit beat up but I loved them anyway.

I gave each one the name of a racing driver, so there was Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Allan Clarke and Graham Hill. A list of favorite..

Cause of sensitive skin difficult to pinpoint.

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Sensitive skin care varies for almost every individual because well, we are all different. Although we like this part of us, it makes it very hard to pinpoint the problem of sensitive skin and also even harder to solve it. We can easily help maintain it, but solving it is a different issue. So let’s look as some sensitive skin care tips that can help you prevent or control your sensitive skin.
First, find out if your problems are even sensitive skin related. Ask yourself these easy questions to help find out:

  • Do you blush, itch or sunburn easily?
  • Does your skin react badly when in contact with wool or latex?
  • Do you have food allergies or break out when changing skin care products?
  • When your stress levels change, does your skin show it?

If you answered yes to number 1, you most likely have fair-skin and has been that way since birth. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to help with this. The most important thing to do is to stay out of the sun for long periods of time and wear sunscreen as needed. Answering yes to number 1 and 2 means that you truly do have sensitive skin. Taking proper precautions like avoiding anything that causes breakouts and being very selective in choosing your skin care product can help manage your sensitive skin.

Additional research needed to figure out why women age faster than men

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Dry skin is certainly more of a problem as we age but research shows that it is more of an issue for women. Making millions of dollars a year, the cosmetic and anti aging industry keeps a steady flow of new and improved products on the market for women. And, with new research, there is reason to believe that women will continue this battle with aging for years to come as opposed to their male counterparts.
Previously, to determine the effects of aging on the skin, doctors would have to remove a sample of skin and examine it under a microscope. A new technique allows doctors to use pulses from an infrared laser to look deep under the skin’s surface and measure collagen and its effects on aging. A study published by the Optical Society of America states that the decreased production of collagen is dependent on the gender of the patient. With this new development in science, researchers have determined that women’s skin ages faster than men’s.
Throughout our lives, our bodies produce collagen, a collection of proteins responsible for skin’s strength and elasticity. As we age, our bodies slowly begin to produce less and less collagen, making skin less elastic, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and dry skin. A host of beauty products claim to promote the development and retention of collagen, but actual results prove hard to measure. This infrared laser pulse technology could help determine the effectiveness of such anti-aging products.

Watch and be Prepared

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

In the mid-Sixties Barry McGuire wrote and performed a song that was to become the mantra of our Apocalyptic times. The first verse of McGuire’s hit song is as follows:

The eastern world, it is explodin’,
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’.
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’.
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin’.
But you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.

It will come as no surprise that the title of McGuire’s 1965 hit song was Eve Of Destruction . .  .

How to Choose a Notary

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

In today’s society, individuals have increased purchasing power and the ability to make financial decisions for themselves that could be of great benefit in the future.  These decisions could also have dire results for either of the parties involved in the business dealing, whatever it may be.  As a way to verify the identity and dependability of parties to a large deal, the profession of notary public was created.  The value of a notary is in ensuring that individuals are the one signing off on a document through being witnessed by another certified person.  Notary services are most common for large transactions, most notably real estate and land deals.

How to Choose a Lawyer

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Lawyers and attorneys are one of the most common professions – and for good reason.  There are many reasons consumers and corporations will use the services of a legal professional.   While there are plenty of jokes and TV shows dedicated to the legal practice, most consumers are not informed about what type of lawyer they really need or how to select the right one for them.  Though there are a plethora of lawyers in our society, this does not mean it will be easy for you to find the one who will be the best for you.

If your skin care product is not effective, try a natural product instead.

Friday, October 6th, 2006

The first step to anti-aging skin care is knowing your skin type. Is it dry or oily? Sensitive or thick? Try to first pinpoint your own skin type before choosing the best method to anti aging. And if you currently have a skin care routine, ask yourself if you are satisfied with it’s effectiveness. If you are not satisfied, you should look for higher quality, natural products that will help improve the condition of your skin. Some of your dissatisfaction could be due to use of petroleum (chemical) based products. Also, if you do not feel comfortable about judging your own skin, see a skincare expert like a dermatologist.

Should I Join Pre Paid Legal?

Friday, October 6th, 2006

Some individuals are very satisfied with the services received for the money invested, whereas others are disenchanted. In some cases, individuals found their coverage limited by their policy or by the specific service they required. In other cases, members’ coverage met legal needs perfectly in both preventive and remedial situations. For you, one of the best ways to determine if a pre-paid legal plan is necessary is to research thoroughly what the policy offers.

If whitening for long term, limit to occasional use.

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Recommendations on the prevention of oral problems due to teeth whitening include using less product, or a kit that limits contact between gums and the bleaching agent. Or, if at all possible, limit long term use to an occasional touch up. Keep in mind that stains are not always caused by outside factors like coffee, aging or smoking. Discoloration could be an indication of cavities, and the use of teeth whiteners could bring expedite tooth decay. If you’re in doubt of the reason why your teeth are stained, contacts a dentist for a check up before starting whitening treatments. Teeth whitening products are a good way to keep your young and fresh smile, but going overboard on treatment could do way more harm than good.
